HD DVD leading in Europe: 85% to 15%

HD DVDDigitimes reports that HD DVD is currently cleaning up in Europe, accounting for 85% of blue-laser players and drives. However, they quite rightly add:

Though HD DVD currently has a lead in Europe, the upcoming launch there of Sony's Blu-ray equipped PS3 game console is expected to heat up competition between the two formats.

Certainly, at my favourite department store here in Britain, the HD DVD display is very near the front of the A/V section, giving customers the option to spend £400 or so on a Toshiba HD-E1. The Blu-ray display, showcasing the Panasonic DMP-BD10 (£1000+) is at the back of the store, near the smaller-size LCD screens. Will the Playstation 3 significantly change Blu-rays fortunes here?

Meanwhile, Toshiba move in and bring HD DVD to the Indian market.

If Blu-ray ends up dominating North America while HD DVD wins out in Europe, the situation will be very interesting...
