Update: all HD DVD players were not made equal?

Paid Ad:

We would all love the clear sound of DVD movies to be provided by our cell phone company! So why not find a company that does that at affordable discount prices? Looking for a great price on an international cell phone? Need to purchase a world phone or look into affordable international cell phone rental for your business trips or more? Then upgrade your phone! When you are looking for international cell phones there is only one place to look for your mobile phone needs, Mobal Rental!

Now this is a baffling issue. You might remember I posted last weekend about our disappointment that a 1080p HD DVD player wasn't actually very good at displaying 1080p.

Well, a reader (thanks James) just got back to me with visual evidence that his Toshiba HD-EP30, in fact, outputs 1080p (and 1080p/24, consequently) correctly WITHOUT any loss of resolution or juddering. To say this is weird is an understatement, because neither of my display devices have any problem with display 1080p natively (indicating the problem does not lie there) and the problem was present both before and after the latest firmware update. What are the odds of me having one faulty unit? My understanding of consumer electronics is that typically, one feature will work correctly or not at all.

I'd think it less likely to be a hardware fault, and more likely Toshiba changed the chipset without changing the model number. Not good practice by any means, but hardly unique.

Have you had a chance to try the unit on another set?

Yes, I looked at it on my own HDTV and on my projector - same problem both times.

Thanks David. Just for info, I bought my EP30 from Amazon.co.uk on the 20th Jan, so its likely to have been manufacturered at very similar times.

I therefore don't think "Alc" hypothesis is likely. Tosh just haven't sold enough in the UK - especially on the 19th Feb we were told only 1million HD DVD players had sold worldwide.

I don't think it's very likely either, but it's more likely than some mysterious hardware fault which halves resolution. Digital equipment doesn't usually break like that.

It's a strange one, to be sure - would be nice to get some clarification from Toshiba on the issue, but I don't imagine they're particularly fussed any more.

Yeah, we used it on an HDTV as well as the Sony Black Pearl projector before sending it back.
