Bootleg fun
Cheap bootleg DVDs can be amusing because they’re usually so incompetently made. So, when I saw a bootleg DVD of “L’important c’est d’aimer” on eBay, I had to buy it and do a PayPal chargeback on the guy who was selling it. For your viewing pleasure:

The bootleg version comes with a slip-case and has a kitsch rainbow effect on it. The bootleggers have used the Mondo Vision film title typeface and artwork and have added a weird gold border to it. They also managed to mis-spell the actors’ names and apparently seem to think that Andrzej Zulawski is an actor, not the director.

The back cover has some phenomenal Engrish on it (OK, not technically Engrish, since this release seems to be from Taiwan). Just read that blurb – fantastic! For some reason, it also has the credits blurb from “Possession”, only they’ve substituted the title for “Szamanka”.

Just in case you were going to rip off these hardworking bootleggers (I bet they spent a whole afternoon on this!), they’ve included Warning text on the disc. Just so you know, the soundtard is copyrighted as well.
The disc is just as incompetent, only it’s a copy of the French StudioCanal version rather than the one I worked on. The encoding quality is pretty lousy in parts, but I don’t know if that’s a result of the bootleg or if that’s just accepted in legit releases.
Well, that was fun. Where’s my PayPal refund?

Funny.
The rainbow kitsch cover is actually better than a lot of studio releases.
I actually thought the quote said “…allows you to use the same for “pirate” home use only” when I first glanced at it. Ha!
The version you worked on is wonderful, btw.
I’ve picked up all 3 Mondo Limited Edition versions so far.
Lyris, what other encodes have you done other than the ones for Mondo Vision? Your encodes are absolutely among the best I’ve ever seen. I wish more would hire guys like you because of your standard of quality.
Thanks Daniel! But the geniuses who wrote Cinema Craft SP2 are also to thank.
The only other retail title I’ve worked on so far is a music video DVD that’s out in a few weeks. I want to change that this year though. Here’s hoping I’ll get to work on some more titles, and on some BDs. I’m just about to put up a site advertising these services at http://www.davidmackenzie.me , so here’s hoping for some bites.
There is also a title I know I’m going to be doing which is set to be pretty high-profile.
It was good of them to remember the soundtard, often overlooked in such copyright matters.
Especially when it’s enbodied in digtal video.
I can see that you are an expert at your field! Thanks for all your help and wishing you all the success in your business.
The funny thing is, the seller insisted the DVD was genuine and almost didn’t give me a refund. I sent him back a long list of reasons why the DVD couldn’t possibly be a genuine product and copied in a few antipiracy addresses (CC, not Blind CC). A refund soon followed.
