Great DVD Alert – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (James Bond)
Me and my brother have been watching all the Bond movies lately, from the top, and not all of them are on BD yet, so he rented this one from Amazon. Usually I like to see what Hollywood studio DVDs are like from a quality standpoint (and usually I groan), but MGM have really got it right with this title. It’s a PAL DVD from the UK.
Take a look at the screen grabs, which are 1:1 from the disc itself (and hence will look squished). There’s a gorgeous amount of detail (see, you can turn the lowpass filter OFF), and the compression is done brilliantly. Click them for full size.

Of course, there’s a small nick in the paint: they encoded it Interlaced, which is typical for a PAL DVD, even although the material is Progressive. I still have no idea why they keep doing this. It’s wasteful from a compression standpoint, but the encoding is done well enough for it not to have too many ramifications (here’s one).

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is also in my opinion one of the best Bond movies and has the best music score of any Bond movie to date.
I hope it gets released on Blu Ray this year and that they fix the small issues with the music cues being off on one of the scenes.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was indeed a great Bond film but it’s greatest fault relies in the casting of George Lazenby. Now to the standards of just about any other Bond film, I would humbly admit that Lazenby’s cocky and youthful facade worked. However this film demanded a seasoned actor. Richard Maibaum and the producers clearly intended on adapting Fleming’s novel loyally; As matter of fact to point of blatantly neglecting the previous Bond film, You Only Live Twice. In Fleming’s source novel Bond was on the verge of resigning from the secret service because he believe SPECTRE and Blofeld had been destroyed; He also generally had his fill of the job as well as one tragic relationship to his name. To cast a 29 year old former model with no-prior acting experience was an error in judgement. Excluding the mis-cast, I would say OHMSS is a well made film.
