I'm a little wary of having an "FAQ" page on a personal web site. I think having my online name appear in glossy letters
as a site logo looks a little pretentious to begin with (although every site needs a name, so that can't really be helped), and it's not like I have a barrage of e-mails every day asking me all about my life (although thank you to the ones that do ask this!)
Yep, the e-mails I do in fact get are usually ones asking about HDTVs, how to set them up, which one to buy, and so on. So, I can
at least include the answers to questions like those in this page.
Q: What's your real name?
By day, I am David Mackenzie. But you may call me Mackenziepants.
Q: I just bought an HDTV thanks to one of the reviews you did, can you tell me what the best settings for it are?
It's all down to your individual tastes, eyesight, room lighting etc., and also how close you want to stick to standards. Oh, and how much money you want to spend. But if you just want something better than the lousy out-of-the-box settings, read my quick and dirty TV setup guide.
Also - don't be afraid to tweak the settings for yourself! You can't break the TV by playing around with it.
Q: You post about the Sony HDTVs so much on the AV Forums, do you work for them?
No, not at all. I earn my pennies doing video compression and DVD authoring work, and do hardware reviews for DVD Times (but that's a contributing job). I've heard that they sometimes read what I have to say, though. They probably have a print-out of my face on a dart-board down there.
Q: Can I e-mail you?
Of course, the link to let you do so is at the top of the page.
Q: What's with you and the "Ultimate Ren & Stimpy" DVD, and when is it coming out?
I don't know when it's coming out, sorry. Nothing's been finalised yet, but the DVD producers have said that they'd like to involve me somehow, and on some level (which probably means including the scene that me and my online buddy Evan restored from VHS as well as ensuring that no additional cuts make their way on). The chances are that when I know when it's coming out, you'll know too.
Q: How long have you had a web site like this one for?
Since about 2001. This was when LiveJournal was the most popular way to post this kind of stuff, although I had mine hosted on a friend of a friend's web space. Although my "blog" was pretty much focused on video games (Sega Dreamcast!), it had its fair share of mostly redundant "who cares" information like most of the others. When I made it, I was at the age where I thought I was incredibly mature because I was good at spelling. I still have it on a CD somewhere, unfortunately.
Since I was at school at the time, some people made fun of me for having an "online diary". Lots of these people now do exactly the same thing on MySpace, so ha. Now it's cool to be uncool.
Q: Your site doesn't look quite right in Internet Explorer, why?
The short answer is: because this is a web site, not an Internet Explorer site. This site is coded to comply with W3C standards and displays properly on a browser (like Firefox, Mozilla, or Opera) that complies with these standards. Microsoft, on the other hand, seem to be using their huge (but shrinking) market share as an excuse to put their feet up, meaning that Internet Explorer is full of odd errors which are a total nightmare for web developers. You can load this site up on a Nintendo Wii and it'll look right, but will show with errors on Internet Explorer, which gives you some idea of the problem.
Rather than cutting features out of this site and limiting users of better browsers, I decided to leave them in and offer IE users the chance to get some better software. Better browsers are free, after all.
It matters a lot to me - and a lot of other people, although I can only speak for myself - because it's sloppiness two areas that are some of my biggest interests - video and animation. And on top of that, it's misuse of old material that's at risk. I also hate the patronising attitude that animated content often gets treated with.
If you don't know what the hell I'm talking about - then you should read the article on Dirt & Scratch Removal (aka DVNR) that started it all.
Q: Where do you live?
In Glasgow, Scotland, which is in Europe (and is also in the UK, depending on your point of view). The stories about the weather being crap are true, but it's a nice enough place.
Q: How old are you?
Right now, I'm 21.
