custom covers

Can you say "here for completeness"? This page has some covers that I did a few years ago. Looking back on them, some of them are quite poor, even if some of the underlying ideas work. A lot of the time, you'll find lazy image manipulation, scanned boxes with minimal cleanup, bad cut-outs, etc. I'm only keeping these here because I'd feel worse if I threw them all away!

A lot of these covers are, in my opinion, examples of image editing jobs that have good underlying ideas but fall short of looking professional. I now have a list of rules that I follow whenever I'm doing a cover to try and avoid mistakes such as the ones found here.

Covers that I'm not hiding away in this bargain-basement like area are on the main covers page.

covers from 2003

Shenmue (Quad-DVD case) (Dreamcast) preview

More Dreamcast-DVD flavored fun this time as I provide a new cover for Yu Suzuki's much-anticipated SHENMUE. The US and European covers for this game were actually good already - this is more of a size adaptation than me being offended at Sega's design.

As with many designs, the back cover is what I feel lets this one down. Cramming the little introductory text on the bottom right of the cover wasn't the best idea, and neither was the cheap cut-out effect around the screen shots.

Skies of Arcadia Legends (Gamecube) preview

What's with pluralizing everything for the Western markets?! "Eternal Arcadia Legend" sounded much nicer. Either way, here is a replacement for Sega of America's fairly crappy box art. I don't know what to think of it myself and I'm especially not fond of the back cover, but I do think it's an improvement.

Mulan (unedited pressing) (DVD) preview

The British Film Neurotics decided that Mulan had to be censored before impressionable Brits were to view it, but Disney messed up and released a set of DVDs with the offending head-butt still intact. Designed more for adult animation fans rather than the smiling child-friendly official cover, this cover has a "12" rating on it, because that's apparently the rating that the film would have received had Disney chosen to leave the offending animation in.

Finding Nemo (DVD) preview

More Disney here, and it's the same old trick - take the cover art of the soundtrack CD/theatrical poster and use it in place of the official "smiles and giggles" cover art.

This one isn't so much "bad", as it is bland. I think the lighting on the back is kind of neat, though.

Sonic Adventure DX (Gamecube) preview

This is to date the only custom cover here that I was actually ASKED to make. When Sega of America unveiled their official cover for this game, people thought it looked terrible. It uses ugly looking 3D renders mashed together with almost no composition whatsoever. I actually made this cover BEFORE the game hit shelves.

Then I remember arriving in New York City on the release date and buying the game at GameStop. The cover actually looked worse in real life and I remember smiling with glee as me any my friends ran back to our hotel in the rain. Awww!

Zelda Bonus Disc (Gamecube) preview

Hahahahahaha! Isn't the cover Nintendo released this game with HORRIBLE? Well, guess what. This custom cover is pretty wretched too! That's because I did this one many moons ago with graphics I found on GeoCities (think I'm kidding?) It's true. I also used my good old TV card to grab stuff from the title screen and shape into a back cover. This is before I actually used a template for anything, so the quality is all over the place.

This one violates almost every rule I now have for making custom covers. I think its only redeeming feature is the blurry but cool art on the front, but even that is covered up partly by a cut-out of Link - for no good reason!

The Zelda games are © Nintendo. Nintendo does not endorse or approve this fan-made cover.
