video ranting

Video ranting? Isn't this whole site video ranting? Well, yes, pretty much. But this page is what used to be called "DVD Video Exposé", with an all-new and improved name. Why the new name? Well, "Video Ranting" is shorter, doesn't need an accent mark over the E making it easier to type, and on top of that, doesn't limit the page to DVDs (a requirement these days, seeing as the Blu-ray camp are putting out plenty of rubbish looking discs for me to rant about).

So, what have we here...

Video Hall of Fame

The DVD Video Hall of Fame is a place where I post screen grabs that show off the best levels of detail and most film-like images that DVD has to offer (the DVDs I know of, that is). Most discs are over-processed and end up lacking fine detail due to a process called filtering, which allows the disc producers to get away with using lower data rates, in order to fill their DVDs with more trailers and usually useless extra features. The best of the best discs will typically feature no or almost no filtering, and the Hall of Fame shows these video transfers that are as good (or nearly as good) as standard definition DVD can be.

Video Hall of SHAME

The DVD Video Hall of Shame is home to screen grabs of discs that look so ridiculously bad that they may in fact damage your retinas and cause hair loss. One thing they all have in common is that they are all from companies or distributors that should be able to do better - no bootleg Video CDs here.

restoration gone wrong: DVNR

Video transfer technicians who don't know what they're doing are finding even more ways to screw up historically significant classical animation. Click here for the evidence of what's really going on in many "Digitally Remastered" animated products.
